Is a Air Source Heat Pump an Efficient Dehumidifier?
Air Source Heat Pumps – Powerful Cooling and Dehumidification Performance in a Single Unit!
Heat pumps have many advantages. Not only are they energy efficient and convenient, but when used to cool the air, they also function as both a central air conditioner and a dehumidifier. Want to learn more about how heat pumps work and why they can be used as both an air conditioner and a dehumidifier? Check it out below!
How Does an Air Source Heat Pump Work? How Does It Dehumidify My Home?
Heat pumps use the same basic design as HVAC systems, but there are some important differences. Like traditional central air conditioning systems, heat pumps use a refrigerant in a "closed loop" design to cool the air. This refrigerant is compressed and heated. The coils in the system then allow the heat to "seep" into the surrounding air. The refrigerant then returns to a liquid state, absorbing heat from the surrounding air, cooling the air.
The system can also be reversed. Cool air can be drawn into the heat pump, then heated and released, combining the functions of a central air conditioner and a heating furnace into one unit. When a heat pump is operating in cooling mode, it removes moisture from the surrounding air through condensation. This means you’ll benefit from lower overall indoor humidity levels, which improves home comfort and reduces perceived heat levels. This, in turn, means you’ll spend less money cooling your home in the summer – because higher humidity levels will make your home feel warmer, even when the air temperatures are relatively cool.
Some air source heat pumps even come with a dedicated “dry mode.” Dry mode allows you to use your heat pump specifically to dehumidify a room. The heat pump will switch between “heating” and “cooling” modes to maintain the temperature of any room while removing excess moisture from the room and providing powerful dehumidification performance. The room will remain the same temperature, but you’ll be able to reduce humidity levels very quickly!
